Fans of mobile computing have been snapping up Apple iPads as soon as the latest version hits the market. People use the portable devices for everything from running a business while away from the office to staying entertained during commutes. Some people have an entire film library saved on their iPads.

Knowing the size of a standard movie file, you may wonder how it’s possible for those individuals to have more than one movie saved on a device with limited storage, especially when you don’t see any external storage device connected to the iPad.

The answer is Xvid, a file-compression application. This free and open source program has the ability to strip a movie file of any unnecessary components and compress the format. With this type of compression, which doesn’t affect the viewing quality at all, a person can put several hours of film onto an iPad.

If you want to convert your iPad into a full-scale media player with your favorite movies, you can do so with the following steps:

1. Make sure you have your files saved as AVI extensions. You’ll need to be working in the Xvid format, which you can download free.

2. Connect your iPad to your computer via the USB cable.

3. Start iTunes and select your device from the list.

4. Highlight or click on the “Apps” tab and scroll to the “File-sharing” option. You should see the applications that allow file sharing on your network.

5. Select your Xvid-enabled media player, such as CineXPlayer. This should pull up a list of any movies you already have access to on your computer. (It isn’t necessary to run your media player during this process, because Apple’s file-sharing protocol handles the transfer, not the media player.)

6. Select the “Add” button and then highlight the movie you want to transfer to your iPad. Again, make sure you select an .avi file. Click the “Choose” button.

7. Wait for Apple to complete the transfer. You should see the transfer in the status bar of your computer. The speed of your computer may affect the speed of the transfer, so close any open programs on older computer models.

8. Locate the movie on your iPad. When Apple completes the transfer, you should see the file on your mobile device. You can disconnect the iPad, open your media player on the device and watch the saved file.

While the iPad is gaining in popularity, it isn’t the only tablet option. You can use similar steps to upload compressed movies to the tablet of your choice, provided you have a file-sharing method that will allow you to transfer Xvid-compressed information to it.

With Xvid software, you can shrink the digital space your movie files take up so you can fit more movies onto your portable device. Why not download your favorite movies to watch during your commute? Xvid software makes it possible.

As a codec package, Xvid comes with an extensive library. Many consider it the most comprehensive package available, and it’s free. Its open source status makes it a widely used Xvid codec, and almost every media player will support it. If you want to encode MPEG-4 files, you can do so using AutoGK and Xvid. AutoGK automates much of the encoding process by reducing the number of steps you need to take.

One of the output models you can use for AutoGK is Xvid. The tool works well for people who want to backup DVDs to play on standalone players. In addition to using AutoGK 1.0+, you’ll need a DVD Decrypter and a DVD to rip.

Using the DVD Decrypter

When you’re ready, insert your DVD into your computer and open it in the DVD Decrypter. Most decrypters will select the longest PGC, which is what you need to rip the DVD. If your PGC has subitems, the decrypter should select an option by default. Again, you should need this option in most cases.

In the settings for the decrypter, you’ll want to check the “IFO Mode” tab. The “File Names” dialog should have two options under it: “Include PGC Number” and “Include Angle Number.” You want to select both options. Press the button to start the DVD.

Continuing With AutoGK

Open AutoGK. The user interface is set up to help you identify the parts you will need for encoding. Start by selecting the source path. This should be the location where the decrypted movie is on your computer. (You should be able to find this by looking in the DVD Decrypter.) Then, pick a location for the output file and browse through AutoGK’s default options.

Use the drop-down lists to select subtitle and audio tracks. Determine the output size based on the number of CDs you will need to use to rip the DVD. You’ll have preset options for TV series, such as four episodes per CD. When you see the Codec option, you’ll want to make sure it is set to “XviD.” Advanced users can play around with other settings, but you can continue the process without making additional changes. Once you have your selections made, click the “OK” button. This should take you back to AutoGK’s main screen.

Use the “Add job” and the “Start” buttons to start the configuration process. The size of the file and your operating system will determine how long it takes to complete the process. To speed up the process, close any open programs that are not in use for the configuration. If you are using more than one CD, you’ll need to keep an eye on the process so you can switch to the new CD and continue the process.

When the configuration ends, you’ll have your backup copy. Because you selected Xvid codec package, you’ll have more options for the type of machines you can use to play the copy.

Everyone wants to start off on the right foot, and Xvid is no different. The developers want their open source program to work flawlessly for anyone who uses it. However, many people’s first exposure to Xvid comes as an error message. This often involves a missing file, usually named Xvidcore.dll.

While you may not have encountered this problem, thousands of Vista Windows users received error messages featuring Xvid when they bought new computers. Many didn’t know what Xvid was. Searching for Xvid indicated the operating system didn’t even have an Xvid program, so how was the error possible?

To understand the problem, it’s important to know about Xvid’s popularity. Xvid is a compression tool that decreases the digital space a media file requires. It works by compressing the file in such a way that it removes unnecessary information from the file during transfer. When the file reaches its destination, no visible data is missing, but the file requires less storage space.

You can image that this would be a popular tool for media devices, such as iPads, DVD players and other media players. The compressed file not only takes less space, but it also transfers faster. Because of Xvid’s open source status, many developers use part of the Xvid project in their own projects. Unfortunately, these developers sometimes fail to provide all the files you need for the application to work correctly on a system that does not have a full version of Xvid installed on it.

If you purchase an operating system with an application that uses part of Xvid, then you might get the error. Sometimes, the error message won’t occur until the first time you try to use a pre-loaded application that came with your new computer.

The fault is not Xvid’s, but its popularity leads it to take the rap. Fortunately, one of the easiest ways to correct the problem lies with Xvid. You can go to the developer’s website and download the available option for your operating system. You don’t even have to pay for the download, because Xvid doesn’t charge for its software or codec packs. The download should include the missing file and resolve the issue.

Once you have the program installed on your computer, make sure you restart it. When you reboot the computer, the error message should be a thing of the past. Once you have the error fixed, remember that Xvid software was the solution and not the problem. The developers will appreciate not taking the blame for something they didn’t cause.

Xvid is a name that you will see everywhere, from free and open source software lists to the DVD player in the store. The scope of the project sometimes confuses people about the purpose for the project; however, Xvid is simply a compression codec. That means it cuts out unnecessary information in a recording, allowing the file to transfer from one device to another at faster speeds.

When you begin working with the Xvid download, you may want to configure it. To access the configuration menu, press the “Configure” button. Here’s a look at your options:

The Profile @ Level: Xvid uses MPEG-4 standards for this configuration. This actually allows Xvid to work across most platforms, which is one reason why you see its name everywhere. Each profile tells Xvid the type of device you want to use to play files.

The profiles all have different levels to control the resolution and the bit-rate limit for the profiles. Your selection will depend on the way you are going to use Xvid. For example, you would want to use “Advanced Simple @ L5″ for DVD conversions because most standalone DVD players accept this profile. If you aren’t sure which level to use, consider the “Unrestricted” profile.

The Encoding Type: You can control the encoding with this configuration option. The settings include a “Single pass” or “Twopass” options.

A single pass uses a constant bit rate during the encoding.

A “Twopass – 1st pass” option will analyze the source and record required data on the first pass after the encoding finishes.

A “Twopass – 2nd pass” option will add another pass to optimize the encoding.

Zones: This configuration option distinguishes between the settings you select for different types of encoding based on the parts of a video. With zones, you can configure Xvid so it uses a lower bit-rate when the credits play than it does during the action-packed scenes in the middle of the film. You can “Add” or “Remove” zones to better utilize this area.

Quality Preset: This is an advanced feature that you can access by clicking the “More” button. It has three tabs to help with configuration: “Motion,” “Quantization” and “Debug.”

The motion options help you increase the quality of the graphics by customizing the configuration for the type of movie you are playing. For example, it has options that improve HD graphics and options that improve cartoon graphics. The quantization options allow you to set restrictions for the motions.

More options: Most of the configuration options have advanced user options that you can access through the “More” button.

You can play around with different configuration and see how modifying the settings can affect your files. Just remember to keep a copy of your original file at all times. To reset the defaults, click the “Load Defaults” button.

By configuring Xvid download, you can customize your program. You don’t have to modify anything for Xvid to work, but the option is there if you want it.

As a video codec library, Xvid allows you to play a variety of media on your computer and other technological devices. It is a popular open source library, and manufacturers and developers use it for a variety of machines, including media players, DVD players, cameras and more. Since Xvid is available under the GNU General Public License, you can add it to any computer or operating system without having to pay for the program.

In addition to being free, Xvid has another attractive feature: it works on a variety of operating systems. The benefit to this is that you can get away from manufacturer gridlock. For example, you can convert files designed for Windows to ones designed for Mac. Because Xvid is so popular, you can use the standard Xvid format to make a file universal for your system.

Making an MP4 Format Into an Xvid Format

One of the more popular conversions is changing MP4 format to Xvid’s format. Most people consider this an easy conversion; however, you will need a program that will allow you to convert media formats. If you don’t have a format converter, you can find several online, including open source programs you can download free. For this tutorial, you will want to make sure you have a converter that can handle both the MP4 format and Xvid’s. Once you have the converter installed on your system, just follow these steps:

1. Open the format converter.

2. Save the MP4 file and open it in the format converter. Depending on the converter you use, you may be able to open the file without saving it to your hard drive first. Some systems will require you to add the file to the converter. When this is the case, you will usually see an “Add file” option.

3. Decide whether you want to convert more than one file at a time. Again, this depends on the converter you are using. If you have a converter that allows batch conversion and you have more than one file, continue adding MP4 files to the converter.

4. Set the output video’s format. In most cases, you will need to change the output format from “AVI” to the Xvid format.

5. Select the path you want your computer to follow to save your new Xvid files. Most converters begin the conversion when you send the file somewhere. This may be a location on your computer or flash drive. You can use the default location provided by your converter, or you can direct the program to save the new format in a custom location.

6. Convert the file. This process will vary from one converter to another. Some will have a button that you need to click to begin the process. Others use the “Save” button as the starting point.

Once Xvid software finishes the conversion process, you will be able to open your new format and enjoy your video. Taking advantage of Xvid’s download popularity is a great way to escape manufacturer gridlock.

There is no way to deny that Apple has stayed on the cutting edge of technology. From the iPods to the iPads, the company has continued to hit home runs with its technological advancements. While consumers are snapping up the latest gadgets from the company, some people who are new to the brand aren’t quite sure how to get around the gridlock.

A gridlock occurs when a manufacturer tries to make it impossible for you to use any other type of software on its system other than the software designed by the company. One of the most common examples of gridlock is Windows reliance on the Microsoft Office Suite. The way around gridlock is open source projects, like Xvid.

So how does this apply to watching movies on your iPad? Xvid is an essential component to have because it is the tool that will convert your movie files into a format your Apple-based iPad will read. If this seems like a foreign concept, think about the different types of file extensions you’ve seen for movies. Most have a .avi, .bin or .mov extension. Of course, there are extensions, but you need the extensions specific to Apple. Xvid can help you with this.

Steps to Setting Up Your iPad to Watch Movies

The first thing you will want to do is find a media player app for your iPad. Some consumers recommend working with the CineXPlayer app, available from the iTunes App Store. Download your media player and install the app on your iPad.

Next, install Xvid on your computer. As an open source project, Xvid is free to download and safe from viruses and other harmful codes. Xvid works as a movie compressor, shrinking the size of your file without negatively affecting quality. You can also change the extension for your compressed file to one compatible with Apple.

Once you have the programs in place, you’ll want to open the movie on your computer. Compress it following Xvid’s instructions. While you are doing this, make sure you select an extension for your movie that will work with CineXPlayer.

The last step is to transfer the compressed files to your iPad. You can use this by connecting your tablet to your computer and opening iTunes. Then, drag and drop your compressed movie files into the queue to by synced to your device. When the transfer finishes, you can open CineXPlayer on your iPad and start a movie.

Break Free of Gridlock

When you understand more about gridlock and the ways that open source projects can help you overcome issues created by manufacturers, you can begin to expand the functionality of your device in ways that you never imagined.

Now, all consumers who are crazy about their iPads have another reason to love the device. With Xvid download and a mobile media player, you’ll have all the tools you need to watch your favorite videos wherever you go. Why not get started today by downloading Xvid?

No matter what programs you use, you’re sure to have questions at some point in time. Sometimes, finding solutions is as easy as doing a search on the Internet. At other times, help may be harder to come by. For many individuals, Xvid falls into the second category. Don’t let this stop you from using the open source program. Instead, check out these four tips for finding help.

1. Look at the “Readme” file included with the installation of Xvid.

Many people often overlook this file, but it has a variety of information in it. The file is especially important for those who want to compile Xvid. By reading it, you will discover how Xvid builds scripts. You’ll also find out how to use Xvid with the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler.

2. Read the other documentation included with the installation.

Xvid is constantly working on new documentation. The developers add new information to the source package as soon as possible. If you have a problem and you are using an older version of Xvid, consider updating to the new version. There is a possibility that the developers may have added the documentation you need to correct the problem.

3. Work with the source code.

Developers are able to add notes to the source code that will not affect how the code operates. By reading the source code, you can learn more about Xvid as a program. The notes may provide the insight you need to solve the problem you are having.

4. Check out Xvid’s website.

Xvid has a frequently asked question page where you can find a variety of information. This page provides suggestions for compiling Xvid to work with certain compilers. It also has suggestions for getting involved in working on the codec. Other information you’ll find includes the following things:

How to troubleshoot problems with the DirectShow filter,

How to improve the video quality,

What ways you can interface with Xvid,

What settings to use to configure the program, and

What does open source mean for Xvid.

In addition to these four things, you may also find useful information by using the Internet to search for the exact issue you are having. You can also contact the development team; however, this option may take the longest length of time to correct the issue.

While Xvid software may not have as much help as other open source projects, it makes every effort to provide users with the information and help they need to take advantage of Xvid. Don’t let people talk you out of using the program because they didn’t know where to get help.

Xvid, which is an open source project, has gained traction in the market and is now among the standard formats you may see for media players. While the program is free of malicious codes, such as viruses, malware, or spyware, you may encounter an occasional problem. Fortunately, many problems have easy fixes. Here are three things you can try if you’re having trouble viewing Xvid files.

1. Install the newest version of Xvid.

The first step to fix any type of issue, regardless of whether it relates to the picture, is to install the newest version of Xvid. One of the reasons the developers release a new version is to correct previous issues and bugs. The installation process will usually uninstall any previous versions on your computer, so all you need to do is visit Xvid’s website and download the latest version for your operating system. Some individuals prefer to uninstall the previous version first before downloading the new one.

2. Correct mirrored or upside-down movies.

Picasso fans might not have trouble watching a movie upside down, but most individuals will. When the picture appears upside down or is a mirror image of what it should be, the issue usually relates to a conflicting filter. The Bicubic Resize filter and the G400 filter can both cause this type of error. In most cases, you may have installed X-Vid filters without realizing it.

First, search your hard drive to determine whether one or both filters are on it. You can use your operating system’s search function, or you can look in your systems directory. If you find either filter, you can unregister them, which should correct the problem. The process for this can vary, but Windows users may be able to use the run box to complete the process. If you have a Windows PC, try typing “regsvr32/ufilename.ax” in the box, with the filename being either bicubic_resizer.ax or divxg400.ax. Then, click the “OK” button.

Second, you can change the settings for Xvid. On Windows, you can access the configuration toolbox by typing “rundll32.exexvid.ax.Configure” into the run box. Locate the “Flip video” option and adjust it.

3. Set your media player to correct dark pictures.

If the images appear shadowed or dark, you may be able to use your media player’s settings to adjust the brightness levels. The process for this will vary, but you may be able to follow steps that are similar to the ones needed for Windows Media Player, version v6.4.

Open the “Properties” tab from the media player’s main user interface.

Select the “Advanced” option.

Locate “Xvid MPEG-4 Video Decoder” in the options.

Choose “Properties.” You may need to right click on the name to get to this menu.

Adjust the brightness using the provided tools. For Windows Media Player, you will have a slider bar.

Problems occur with any type of software. By trying these three things, you may be able to correct the issues you are having with Xvid download.

Downloading open source programs, like Xvid, can be a great way to get a tool that you need at a price you like — free. If you’re an open source fan, then you already know that programs under this label provide access to the source code, do not charge a fee to download, and do not collect royalties from people who modify the code.

Once an idea hits the market, more than one development team will come up with a version of the project. This may be one reason why you aren’t sure whether you want to download Xvid or look for another program. Here are four reasons why you should download Xvid.

1. Graphics

When you watch a video, you want to see the movie in the best possible way. The quality of the video often depends on the codec library included in your video player. Xvid has had its quality tested by third-party, impartial reviewers, and it has earned high scores across the board for its picture quality.

2. Speed

Xvid works in a similar way to a zip utility. It compresses a file to increase the speed of the transmission. This allows the program to encode or decode a video faster than other programs. Unlike a zip utility, Xvid does lose some of the transmission; however, the parts it eliminates are things the human eye cannot detect. The result of the compression process is a faster playback. Additionally, Xvid has special elements in place for PCs that use features such as hyperthreading or SSE3 instruction.

3. Popularity

In most industries, using something that you didn’t create leads to copyright infraction. However, in the open source community, using code from another project is something most developers expect and encourage. That’s right — they expect their codes to fuel other projects. Some developers look at the code as building blocks.

When a program becomes popular, more developers will rely on it for parts of their programs and devices. Xvid’s popularity has led to manufacturers and developers incorporating it into several applications. If it’s good enough to “borrow” for other projects, it should definitely surpass your expectations.

4. Connectivity

This last point works in conjunction with Xvid’s popularity; however, it takes the benefit one step farther. Since manufacturers can use Xvid’s file format, many have included Xvid in products, such as DVD players, media players, and computers.

When you use devices that all have Xvid included, you gain the advantage of connectivity. You can use the Xvid features to share information across the devices. With the right knowledge, you can download an Xvid video on your home computer, transfer it to your laptop, or watch it on your mobile phone.

Xvid software is a leader in the open source community, and many would agree it is a leader in the commercial community. If you are looking for an open source program you can use, keep these four reasons in mind and then choose Xvid.

Today, many individuals have truly unplugged the office. With laptops, smartphones, tablets, and other mobile computing devices, it is possible to do a full day of work without having to step into the office.

While many consumers love having a mobile office, it would be remiss to think that these individuals are only using those devices for work. The app markets are full of entertaining programs that can expand a device’s capability. Many of these apps deliver games, jokes, recipes, or other things not related to work. If you fall into the group of consumers who use mobile computing for entertainment, you may want to know how you can watch movies on your portable device.

Almost every smartphone and tablet provider has some type of app for viewing videos. However, these apps usually have limited file capability. For example, you may be able to watch a 30-minute television show, but the app most likely won’t have a feature-length film. If you want to watch a movie, you need to combine some programs.

The first thing you need is Xvid. This is a free and open source program that works similar to a zip utility. Xvid will take a film and compress it for transmission. When the digital file arrives on your smartphone, or other mobile device, Xvid will decompress the file. The compression process is possible because Xvid is able to strip away unnecessary components from the file.

Next, you need an application that can read Xvid files. After you download Xvid, consider an open source media player for free, or you can install a program to convert the Xvid file to one your mobile computing device will recognize. Once you have the media player in place and the file on your mobile device, you’ll be able to watch the entire video, provided you have a battery that can handle the drain of the programs.

By downloading Xvid, and using other applications, it is possible to turn your smartphone or your tablet into a miniature movie screen. The process is easy to do, and you can find all the apps and programs you need free of charge when you use open source projects. You already enjoy the freedom of getting out of the office, so why not enjoy the freedom of taking your media center with you?
